Megadroughts and pluvials in southwest Australia: 1350–2017 CE

چکیده

Abstract Declining winter rainfall coupled with recent prolonged drought poses significant risks to water resources and agriculture across southern Australia. While declines over decades are largely consistent modelled climate change scenarios, particularly for southwest Australia, the significance of these is yet be assessed within context long-term hydroclimatic variability. Here, we present a new 668-year (1350–2017 CE) tree-ring reconstruction autumn–winter inland This record reveals that decline in Australia (since 2000 not unusual terms either magnitude or duration relative variability last seven centuries. Drought periods greater than those instrumental occurred prior 1900 CE, including two ‘megadroughts’ > 30 years eighteenth nineteenth By contrast, wettest decadal centuries after making twentieth century We conclude ~ does capture full scale natural risk droughts region likely much higher currently estimated.

Old World megadroughts and pluvials during the Common Era

Climate model projections suggest widespread drying in the Mediterranean Basin and wetting in Fennoscandia in the coming decades largely as a consequence of greenhouse gas forcing of climate. To place these and other "Old World" climate projections into historical perspective based on more complete estimates of natural hydroclimatic variability, we have developed the "Old World Drought Atlas" (...

Are Simulated Megadroughts in the North American Southwest Forced?*

Multidecadal drought periods in the North American Southwest (258–42.58N, 1258–1058W), so-called megadroughts, are a prominent feature of the paleoclimate record over the last millennium (LM). Six forced transient simulations of theLMalongwith corresponding historical (1850–2005) and 500-yr preindustrial control runs from phase 5 of theCoupledModel Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) are analyzed t...

Bioclimatic Extremes Drive Forest Mortality in Southwest, Western Australia

Extreme and persistent reductions in annual precipitation and an increase in the mean diurnal temperature range have resulted in patch scale forest mortality following the summer of 2010–2011 within the Forest study area near Perth, Western Australia. The impacts of 20 bioclimatic indicators derived from temperature, precipitation and of actual and potential evapotranspiration are quantified. W...

North American megadroughts in the Common Era: reconstructions and simulations

During the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA), Western North America experienced episodes of intense aridity that persisted for multiple decades or longer. These megadroughts are well documented in many proxy records, but the causal mechanisms are poorly understood. General circulation models (GCMs) simulate megadroughts, but do not reproduce the temporal clustering of events during the MCA, sugges...

Long-term variations in winter rainfall of southwest Australia and the African monsoon

The rainfall in southwest Western Australia (SWWA) mostly falls in May to September, and predominantly in June, July and August (JJA). Records show that, prior to the 1960s, this area had the most reliable rainfall in the country, but in the late 1960s a decrease of approximately 20 per cent (from approximately 3.8 mm/day to 3 mm/day for JJA) occurred in the longterm mean (IOCI 2002), which per...
